What’s luck got to do, got to do with it??

You could actually sing those lines to the tune of that famous Tina Turner song ‘What’s love got to do, got to do with it…’ catchy tune and lousy sentiments, I’ll save my comments on that one for another day.
During my school days the greeting ‘Best of luck’ was a staple and we used it like a mantra. It didn’t really matter whether you were a child or an adult - it was used often and with utmost sincerity. Especially around exam times you would hear it a lot ‘Best of luck’, ‘Best of luck’. Actually, my guess is that this happens even today around the world. I never really gave any thought to it and used it at will, after all it was just a phrase. Then during my teenage years I came across Barry McGuire, a rock & roller who had come to know Jesus as his personal Saviour - was born again - and started singing for Christ. An older brother at church gave me an album of his to listen, it was a live recording of his concerts and tucked in it was a song ‘I don’t believe in luck, I believe in Jesus. I don’t believe in chance, I believe in Him.’
It was great song with a great tune and a simple yet powerful message. It made me think, and the more I thought about it and matched it with my own belief, it made total sense.

Needless to say, this impacted me in a big way - since then I have conciously refrained from using the phrase ‘Best of luck’. When I profess that Christ is the Lord of my life, luck can not be a part of the equation and has nothing to do with the way my life unfolds. I was also convinced that it was not right for me to make others feel that ‘luck’ was something that could affect their lives.
I thought I’d share this with you and have you think about it. The Bible says ‘Our God in the heavens and He does what pleases Him’ and this is the God we believe in - so where does luck come into the picture?? When my father passed away, it was the result of a lack of action at the proper time, he got dehydrated and because he was also diabetic his systems began to shut down and within a week he was gone. Was that luck or was it God’s plan? Even at that time I had to deal with this issue and reach the conclusion for myself that - it had nothing to do with luck or chance or fate but the way God planned it.
Living out the christian life does not happen when we are at church or sitting around discussing the Bible - it happens every moment that we are alive. It happens when our cars breakdown, when we are buying groceries, when we are out to eat - every moment is living the christian life. Our careers, our choices are they by chance or are they dictated by God?
Often times ‘luck’ is also the crutch that we use to explain our failures. Why is someone doing so well? - they were so lucky. God has given you the wherewithal to make a difference in your life and in the life of others. When life throws you a curve ball don’t think there is nothing you can do it about it. Think of what it is that God want’s you to learn from the situation - make the changes and move ahead. Don’t fall in this trap.
Life is not a game of chance and luck, it is a gift from God to fulfill His purposes.

I completely concur with Ben on this matter of luck, a logical analysis of the word ‘luck’.
